McLaren reveals yet another fresh livery for the Abu Dhabi season finale

Updated: Thursday 23rd November at 12:30.As if there wasn't enough to do with just four days between the chequered flag at the dramatic Las Vegas Grand Prix and Free Practice 1 for the final race of the year in Abu Dhabi, McLaren has unveiled yet another fresh one-off livery for the season finale.

This time, it's the team's Vuse sponsor that's in the spotlight, highlighted extravagantly in blue on the sidepods and front wing.

McLaren actually started work on applying the new designs during the race in Vegas, with a team of six on hand to carry out the glow-up in the garage.

Updated: Friday 17th November 2023 at 12:53.Alfa Romeo might have won the latest livery battle with its spectacular effort for the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix. Usually wearing red and black, the car is now all black with a strip of neatly arranged playing cars wearing the Quadrifoglio symbol like an ace and the number 6. The six represents the number of years Sauber has been working with Alfa Romeo in Formula 1.

The garage and driver’s race suits will also get something of a makeover to match the car’s spectacular new livery, which it will only wear in Sin City.

Both Alfa Romeo and AlphaTauri released their special liveries around about the same time, with the Red Bull junior team going for a radical black with aerodynamic white stripes colour way. Unlike the Alfa Romeo, the AT04 will wear this scheme for both Vegas and the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi next week.

Alfa and AlphaTauri follow McLaren, Red Bull, Ferrari, Williams and Alpine in making changes to their liveries to mark the occasion of the first Las Vegas Grand Prix, which will take place this weekend on Sunday 19th November.

Updated: Thursday 16th November 2023 at 11:45. Five F1 teams will run special one-off liveries for the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix. Red Bull has had a special livery for each of the American F1 races in 2023 – Miami, COTA and Las Vegas – but this is the first time the whole livery has been altered rather than just some sidepod changes. The RB19 now boasts a purple undercoat and pink and yellow neon flashes down the side as well as a pair of ace of spades cards on the sidepod.

McLaren’s additions are smaller, with more promotion for Jack Daniels in the form of extra stickers on the car.

Williams has gone all out with its changes. The famous “Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas” sign which has been in numerous films and TV shows now adorns the engine cover as well as the word Williams spelled out in blue writing. The changes take over the engine cover and the rear wing on the FW45.

Alpine has altered its livery only slightly, as part of a partnership with clothing brand Palace. The blue and pink sections of its BWT-sponsored livery now have a pattern to its base layer and drivers Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon will be wearing specially-designed overalls.

Finally Ferrari will be running an red and white livery for the first time since 2017. Taking inspiration from the colours its cars wore the last time F1 raced in Las Vegas. All sponsor logos, the shark fin on the engine comer, front wing lower plane and endplates and rear wing will all be in white in Las Vegas.

As a result, half of the grid will wear special liveries for the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix. Which paint job do you think is best?

Red Bull reveals fan-designed F1 livery

Updated: Thursday 19th October at 15:30. The Red Bull F1 team will run a fan-designed livery during the US Grand Prix at COTA. The design, in similar fashion to that revealed this week by Haas, features a stars and stripes design down the sidepods, tub and both rear and front wing endplates.

As well as the connection with the national flag of the USA, red and white stripes and a star on blue background also feature on the flag of Texas, the state in which the race will take place.

Updated: Tuesday 17th October at 16:50. Haas F1 has teased an updated stars and stripes-related livery for its home race, the US Grand Prix at COTA.

The livery, shown on images from the F1 2023 video game, features the stars and stripes in red white and blue on the side pod, sub and front wing end plate. It also has the words ‘we the people’ on the side of the tub, representing the first three words of the American Constitution.

The team is the only American outfit in Formula 1 and will bring a major update package to its Haas VF-23 to the race in Austin, Texas.

McLaren reveals another special livery for Singapore and Japan

Updated: Wednesday 13th September at 11:30. The McLaren F1 team will race with another new livery for the next two races. In conjunction with sponsor OKX the McLaren MCL60 will run with much more black than normal on its livery.

The change sees the sidepod design inverted, so that the OKX logo has switched from black to orange and the background orange to black. The blue sections, on the side and nose, have been replaced by black and orange respectively while the rear wing is now completely orange with two OKX logos rather than one.

Alfa Romeo reveals 33 Stradale F1 livery for Monza

Updated: Thursday 31st August at 9:30. The Alfa Romeo F1 team has revealed a special livery for its final Italian Grand Prix under the brand’s name. Celebrating Alfa Romeo’s new limited-edition supercar the 33 Stradale, the livery will be used for the race at Monza this weekend.

With Audi having bought into the Sauber F1 team that Alfa Romeo currently brands, the Italian manufacturer will end its partnership at the end of this season. So the new livery celebrates not just the new supercar but also the end of Alfa Romeo’s current period in F1.

The new colour-scheme replaces the red and black that Alfa Romeo usually uses, with the Italian tricolore across both the very back end of the car and the nose. It also bears the words 33 Stradale on the rear wing and the engine cover.

Ferrari reveals Le Mans celebration livery for Monza F1

Updated: Wednesday 30th August at 11:45. Ferrari will race in red yellow and black in the Italian Grand Prix to celebrate the marque’s return victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours in June.

Ferrari returned to the top level of the sportscar racing fold in 2023 for the first time since 1973 with its 499P Le Mans Hypercar. The AF Corse-run team won the Le Mans 24 Hours on its first time back and the F1 team – starved of victories itself this season – will run the new livery in tribute to that win.

The Ferrari World Endurance Championship team’s livery has a much larger focus on the yellow hue that was seen on early Ferrari-run racing cars. That is reflected in a chunky stripe down the engine cover on the SF-23 F1 car and yellow numbers for both Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc.

The drives will also wear specially-designed helmets and race suits to commemorate the famous victory.

Alfa Romeo reveals a special livery for the Belgian Grand Prix

Updated: Monday 24th July 2023 at 12:15. The Alfa Romeo team will be unleashing a revised, and striking one-off livery for the Belgian Grand Prix. It’s been designed to celebrate the team’s partnership with streaming platform Kick.

The pair shook hands on a deal at the beginning of the 2023 season, but this will be the first time that the Kick branding has appeared on the car in a prominent position. But it’s not just a new logo, it’s also going to be popping out of the Alfa Romeo’s sidepods and rear wing in a vibrant green colour.

Drivers Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu will be hoping their promising performance in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix is here to stay, although the team still has work to do to improve its race pace after a disappointing Sunday.

The Kick platform is a new startup backed by Stake.com. Intended to become a rival for Amazon’s Twitch streaming service, it has attracted more than 10million users since launching in December 2022.

McLaren introduces a new chrome livery for the British Grand Prix

Updated: Wednesday 7th July at 11:00. This is becoming something of the norm for McLaren this season, as once again the two Papaya cars will run in a one-off livery, this time for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

As a nod to its sponsor Google and that company’s Chrome brand, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will race in a chrome colour scheme said to be inspired by McLaren’s previous chrome livery that it ran from 2006-2014. The drivers will also be wearing specially-designed race suits for weekend.

Splashes of the famous orange remain the focal point of the car’s design, but several areas that are normally left black will instead glisten in the (fingers crossed) sunshine at Silverstone this weekend.

Williams asks fans to choose a Gulf livery for 2023

Updated: Friday 26th May at 16:20. The Williams F1 team has announced it will run a Gulf livery for the Singapore, Japanese and Qatar Grands Prix later on in the 2023 season, but the design will be chosen by fans.

This is the first year of a new partnership between Williams and Gulf, which had previously been a sponsor of McLaren. Following initial disappointment that the inconic orange and blue livery would not be returning to the grid in a permanent capacity, this is at least a decent second prize.

There are four livery designs to choose from that Williams has put forward, now the onus is on F1 fans to pick which one they want to see on track. You can vote for your favourite Gulf Williams livery here.

Williams Team Principal, James Vowles, said: “I’m excited to announce the livery vote as part of our partnership between Gulf and Williams Racing.

"The winning livery will showcase two iconic motorsport brands coming together. Our fans have the opportunity to create motorsport history with their livery decision, bringing this partnership to life.

“I can’t wait to see the winning design and watch the Williams Racing fans cheering the team on."

You don't have long to wait to see the winning design either, which will be on display on a showcar at the Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard.

McLaren to race in a one-off livery at the Monaco Grand Prix

Updated: Tuesday 23rd May 2023 at 17:25. McLaren has revealed a unique livery it will run both cars in for this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix. A three-stripe black, white and papaya colour scheme symbolises the Woking team’s Triple Crown victories: the 1974 Indy 500 with the M16C, the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours with the F1 GTR, and the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix with the MP4/2.

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will be hoping that this striking livery will bring some much-needed performance to the MCL60, and perhaps even add to McLaren’s Triple Crown history. The team has won at Monaco on 15 occasions, the most of any team in F1 with a list of drivers including Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Mika Häkkinen, Kimi Räikkönen and Lewis Hamilton.

Commenting on this special livery, Zak Brown, CEO, McLaren Racing, said: “Having achieved the greatest accomplishment in motorsport by completing the Triple Crown, we are proud to celebrate the rich history of McLaren Racing with a special livery at the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix.

“In line with our 60th anniversary celebrations and honouring the legacy of Bruce McLaren, the unique livery pays homage to the three victories which form the Triple Crown accolade.”

The 2023 Monaco Grand Prix takes place this weekend. Free Practice gets underway on Friday 2nd June, with the race on Sunday 4th June.

Updated: Thursday 4th May at 12:50.Red Bull has revealed a special livery that the cars of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez will wear for the Miami Grand Prix. The livery, which features blue, pink and purple intertwining stripes down the sidepods, was designed by a fan in a team competition. It is currently set to be used once for the Miami Grand Prix.

Martina Adriano, from Argentina, created the winning design, which was picked by a judging panel that included team boss Christian Horner. While the livery may not been seen again for the rest of the season, fans will be able to use it in the upcoming F1 23 game.

Every 2023 F1 car revealed

Updated: Saturday 17th Semptember at 09:15.We have now seen every one of the ten cars that will race in the 2023 F1 season, or at least had sight of the liveries they will wear. Most teams seem to have gone for revolution rather that evoltion in design, perhaps a result of the new restrictions on spending, and many have begun to gravitate toward the Ferrari and Red Bull design concepts – no real surprise.

The overarching theme though has been black, not a single car is on the grid now without an area of black on its livery, the bare bits of carbon will allow for small weight loses on cars that have already proved incredibly heavy.

There are also some intriguing design hints, take Mercedes massive engine cover or Ferrari's new ducts, but we'll have to wait until testing begins later this month to actually work out what the final 2023 cars will look like.

In the meantime, here's a gallery of all of them together, which do you think looks best?

Alpine unveils A523 2023 F1 car

Updated: Friday 17th February at 09:00. Alpine has become the final team of the 2023 Formula 1 season to unveil its new car, with covers coming off the A523 at an event in London on Thursday night (16th February).

The car, which will be raced by Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon, was presented in two different liveries – as it was for the 2022 season –one majority in Alpine’s traditional blue, the other a total takeover of pink of the team’s main sponsor BWT. As with all cars on the grid in 2023, the A523 showcases a lot of bare carbon to save weight, as teams try to claw back as much as they can.

The blue livery will be used at most of the bumper 2023 season’s races, with the all-pink look used for just the opening three Grands Prix, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Australia.

Updated: Wednesday 15th February 2023 at 10:10. Mercedes has revealed the W14, the car which Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will race in the 2023 Formula 1 season. The most striking change with the new car, is a return to the mostly black livery that the team used in the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

The rest of the car, at least in its current state, seems to follow a largely similar philosophy to the 2022 car, with minimal, almost nonexistent sidepods. Whether this changes for the first test, we will have to wait and see, given that the 2022 zero sidepod concept wasn’t seen until the first test of last year.

Ferrari has revealed its SF23 F1 car to much fanfare, which, including the reveal, involved Charles Leclerc taking the car for some fast laps of Fiorano. Seemingly continuing with last year’s design concept it should be one of the slipperiest cars on the grid. It’s also designed to be a more balanced car, with a goal of delivering a consistent feel for the drivers in both fast and slow corners.

Ferrari has been working tirelessly to develop its powertrain within the constraints of the engine freeze, to deliver its performance reliably. Last year’s car was plagued with issues informing the necessity to peg the engine’s performance back. This year, they’ll be hoping to properly unleash their power unit.

New for the team this year is also team principal Fred Vasseur, coming from Alfa Romeo and bringing with him an existing close relationship with Charles Leclerc. It’ll be interesting to see the team dynamic unfold this year and see if the car can deliver the more consistent performance the team will be hoping for.

Aston Martin has revealed the AMR23, its challenger for the 2023 Formula 1 world championship and it’s probably the most radical departure from the car that came before we’ve yet seen.

Employing a swooping Red Bull-esque side pod concept that also features Ferrari’s scooped-out concept on top, it also drops its nose further and features a revised engine cover.

This will be the third year in Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll’s five-year plan for victories in F1. As the new factory and wind tunnel come online later this year, the benefits perhaps won’t yet be felt, but with new talent poached from Red Bull behind the new car, there’s a feeling of optimism and hope at Team Silverstone, with a car that’s self-described as ‘bold’. As ever, the boss will be wanting to see results and an indication of progress, especially with new appointee, two-time world champion Fernando Alonso behind the wheel.

McLaren has revealed what is a conservative new car for the 2023 Formula 1 world championship season, which also happens to be the 60th anniversary of the team’s founding by Bruce McLaren in 1963.

The MCL60 sports a more Red Bull-esque sidepod concept complete with down-swoop and ‘chin’. The sidepod inlet and underfloor fences appear revised, although the MCL60 appears for the most part an iterative update over last year’s car.

What is entirely new for the team this year is new appointment Oscar Piastri, taking the place of Daniel Ricciardo as the team’s second driver, next to Lando Norris, who goes into his fifth season at McLaren this year. Both will be hoping for a more competitive car than McLaren were able to field last year.

Alphatauri AT04 revealed

Alphatauri has revealed the car with which it will race in the 2023 F1 season: The AT04. Following on from a slightly dissappointing season in 2022, the team will be hoping that its new driver pairing of Yuki Tsunoda and Nyck de Vries will find more success in '23 with this new car.

While blue and white prevail on the new livery, like all teams there is a growing amount of black on the car, although this appears to have been cleverly hidden in the lower portions on the AT04, as teams try to save weight. There is also the addition of red, thanks to the addition of new sponsor Orlen.

Alfa Romeo reveals 2023 F1 car

Updated 09:45 on Tuesday 7th February 2023. Alfa Romeo has revealed the first images of its new C43 F1 car, which will be driven by Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu in 2023, and be the final Sauber car to bear the Alfa Romeo name.

The biggest change for the livery, which was revealed in Switzerland this morning (7th February) is a switch from white to black for the base colour. Previous Saubers under the Alfa Romeo partnership have been majority white with red over the top.

It was announced toward the end of last season that Alfa Romeo would be ending its partnership with Sauber, in advance of the arrival of Audi in 2026. The German manufacturer has since bought a third of the Swiss team.

Williams reveals its 2023 F1 livery

This new livery is more than a little reminiscent of last year’s Williams, the same blue and black colour scheme remains, but there are a couple of new additions to the list of sponsors appearing.

The big new addition for Williams is the arrival of Gulf, although we’re slightly disappointed not to see the brand have more of an influence in the livery.

Alpine to unveil 2023 F1 car on 16th February

Updated: Thursday 5th January at 14:30. The Alpine F1 team has announced that its new car – named the Alpine A523 – will be unveiled on 16th February. It is the fourth team to announce a date for the reveal of a 2023 machine, which will be raced by Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon. The British-based French team also confirmed that the launch will take place in London.

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Last year’s unveilings were perhaps the most anticipated in the category’s long history. The explosion of popularity over the last few years, mixed with completely new car design rules and a promise of better racing meant the fanbase was extremely ready when the wraps started coming off cars – even if some turned out to be nothing like the actual racing machines.

While this year’s expectations are still high, what’s revealed will most likely not be quite as revolutionary as before. As with all regulations we can expect cars to begin to converge on what engineers have decided was the “right” solution, but with a few surprises thrown in.

Key launches to look out for will be Mercedes – will it stick with the concept that it just began to get its head around later in 2022, or throw it away for something more Red Bull-like? – Ferrari, hoping to sustain a more realistic title challenge in 2023, and Red Bull, the walkaway winner of the first season to the new rules.
