The 10 most bizarre car accessories - but are they a ridiculous waste or an incredible invention? (2024)

WHERE there are cars, there will always be accessories.

But there is nothing to say those additions to your motor have to make sense.

11

If you scour the internet for long enough, you will find a unique invention capable of virtually anything you can think of doing while in your vehicle.

Ever get the craving for a hot meal while sitting in traffic? No problem, it's sorted.

Wish your car looked more like an 1980s p*rn star? Easy fix.

Or want to convince passengers you drive a V8 despite the fact that you can't quite afford the sporty engine? There's a gadget for that.

There is a gizmo for almost anything, but are they really that worthwhile?

Here are 10 of the most bizarre accessories to go with your beloved car - see if you agree with our assessment of them as junk or genius.

10. Bonnet hair

11

Ever wished your had a lush bonnet of hair?

Nope, neither have we.

But someone apparently felt bad for all the bald vehicles out there, and came up with some furry accessories to give your motor a bit of self-confidence.

Car eye lashes have been around for quite some time, while the car moustache is a slightly less common sight on the road.

Regardless of how concerned you are about your vehicle's lack of hair, these will always be JUNK.

9. Hello Kitty exhaust tip

11

There are plenty of flashy exhaust tips on the market, from skulls to flames to skulls with flames.

But if you fancy something a little on the softer side, Hello Kitty has a cute addition for you.

Whack the little metal kitten on the end of your exhaust pipe to finish it off, and let every other motorist know that you refuse to mature into adulthood.

Hello Kitty should have stuck to what they do best - ridiculously oversized and entirely impractical iPhone cases.

Sorry Kitty fans, but this is JUNK.

8. The 'Espressgo'

11

For those that struggle to get out of bed on time, your morning coffee no longer has to suffer.

Lavazza offer a convenient travel-sized coffee machine that slots right into your cup holder, meaning you can brew the perfect espresso while you drive to work.

All it needs is a 12V power supply - so your cigarette lighter will do - and it is ready to go.

For convenience alone, this one has to be GENIUS.

7. The 'Vroominator'

11

The name says it all really.

This device, when plugged into your car's cigarette lighter, connects to the audio system and makes any engine sound like a V8.

Sounds great, right? Even the driver of aFiat Cinquecento can give passengers the impression his beloved motor has the same kind of power under the hood as a Ford Mustang.

Only it doesn't.

It's still just aFiat Cinquecento with a 1.1-litre lawn mower engine under hood and cylinder noise blaring from its speakers.

The Vroominator is a fraud, and that makes it total JUNK.

6. Steering wheel tray

11

The Wheelmate from AutroExec is a neat little invention designed to make grabbing a quick bite in your car significantly easier.

Shaped similar to a plane's tray table, the Wheelmate clips on to your steering wheel to give you a mini table to eat from, or use as a desk.

But don't be fooled, you certainly can't use it while driving.

It would be dangerous and illegal, not to mention the fact that a sharp turn would send your spaghetti bolognese flying across the car.

That aside, this GENIUS idea converts your driver's seat into a work space whenever you need to pull over and answer a few emails.

5. Bullet hole stickers

11

Not a lot can be said about this accessory - or the people who use them.

Designed to make your car look like its been in a shootout, the bullet hole sticker is a mainstay of any supped-up boy racer.

It's hard to understand why someone would want to have a car riddled with bullet holes, and it is even harder to understand why they would want to fake it.

Unfortunately, the bullet hole sticker is complete and utter JUNK.

4. Clothes rail for your backseat

11

Perfect for anyone that struggles to get their freshly ironed shirt neatly pressed on the way to work, you can now install a clothes hanging rack in your backseat.

It simply clips on to the two passenger handles on the roof and gives you the entire width of your car to store your fashion items.

The item may become slightly impractical when passengers try to jump in the back.

This one is leaning towards JUNK, unless you like to take a selection of work shirts with you to work and decide on the day.

But if you are a travelling shirt salesman, it is pure GENIUS.

3. Mini Microwave

11

Almost anyone can see the benefit in having a microwave handy at all times.

Small enough to sit in your boot without taking up all the space, this mini microwave from Maplin plugs into your cigarette lighter, allowing you to heat up food on the go.

While it probably isn't a good idea to use it while you are driving, the gadget is perfect for camping or as an addition to any workman's vehicle for those cold, winter lunch breaks.

Storing one in your boot while make you the GENIUS of the work site.

2. Rotating license plate

11

A number of UK drivers have already invested in the rotating number plate as a way of dodging speed cameras.

At the simple press of a button, your registration plate will flip over to cover the digits, essentially making it impossible for you to be identified on camera.

Made famous in the James Bond films, anyone found having fitted one of these could face jail time.

While it has to be labelled JUNK as it is incredibly illegal, you have to admire the intelligent design.

1. French Fry holder

11

Our top spot goes to possibly the most simple accessory in the mix - the French Fry Holder.

Fitting in the cup holder of your car, the gadget gives motorists a larger space to hold their fast food without trying to balance it in their lap or stuff it in the console.

It's so simple, yet that's what makes it so perfect.

Pure GENIUS for all lovers of deep-fried potatoes.
