HATFIELD -- Wilna Fern Hatfield, 1917-2003, 86 years ago on May 17, 1917, Wilna Fern Cannon was born on a farm in Tioga, TX. She was one of three girls in a family of nine children, raised by their widower father. She grew up as a farm girl, even once riding a Brahma Bull in a rodeo. At 17 she went to a dance where she met her future husband, who always said she walked in and " turned every head in the place". Within weeks Willie Guy Hatfield became the love of her life and husband of 68 years. Mr. and Mrs. Hatfield picked cotton as newlyweds and over the next three years had two children, Billy George and Sue Janis. The young family then moved to Los Alamos, NM in 1945, to work for Robert E. McKee Construction Inc. During their time in Los Alamos, Fern was a pitcher for a women's softball team. They lived in Los Alamos during the testing of the A-bomb. They stayed active working hard and spent their spare time hunting and fishing with family and many good friends. The family later moved to Santa Fe and built their first house, Fern grew prize-winning dahlias there. After ten years in Santa Fe they moved to Albuquerque where they settled in the North Valley in 1955. Hattie and Fern were members of the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Posse, and Fern was a New Mexico State Fair Parade Horsewomen. She won several parade ribbons and was known for her flashy and beautiful custom designed parade regalia. In the 1970s Wilna began work with APS as an educational assistant in the South Valley, she was a natural teacher. By this time three grandchildren had come along and Fern constantly entertained her grandkids and her students with multitudes of priceless, hilarious "tales". She loved her children and they loved her too. They became the focus of her life, along with extended fishing trips in South Texas with Hattie. Fern loved to collect shells on the beach with her grandkids. After 20 years with APS, 12 being a crossing guard, a stroke slowed her down and she retired at 82 years old. Her last four years were spent at the family home, cared for by her daughter, Sue Barnum and her husband. This year her health declined further and her care was aided by the wonderful people of Share Your Care, and more recently by lots of TLC from Lovelace Hospice. Their care and loving support will not be forgotten. "G.G." died peacefully on Tuesday, November 25, 2003, at 2:30 a.m., her daughter, loving husband and granddaughter at her side. She was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters, the last of the Cannon family, and two grandsons, Frank and Perry Hatfield. She is survived by her husband, Willie Guy, 90; her two children Sue Barnum and Bill Hatfield; her granddaughter and family, Tami and Jeff Krebbs and four great -grandkids, Cannon, Avery, Madeleine and Jackson Krebbs of Elgin, TX; other nieces, nephews, family and friends. Our memories of your infectious smile and dancing blue eyes will be imbedded in our hearts forever as we commend you to your heavenly home. "G.G." P.S. Dear God, please have a pair of bright red wings ready for Grandma, thanksÂ…Arrangements Direct Funeral Services, 2919 4th NW ABQ. 343-8008.
